“Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful” (Proverbs 27:6). A friend finds it hard to say anything that might hurt a friend, but is willing to do so if it is for the long-term benefit of his or her friend. God loves mankind and corrects His children (Hebrews 12:6). He shows us how loving parents ought to correct those they love when that is needed.

Cruel blows from enemies are only designed to inflict pain and suffering upon us. That sort of brutality and cruelty usually springs from hard-heartedness and weakness. The blows of a friend may seem cruel, but they lead to health and a better life. Knowing the difference lets us respond correctly. Pain can be positive.

There are times to speak and times to remain silent. Knowing the difference between these moments demonstrates our ability to have wisdom. Many people seem to put their feet in their mouths all too often. Silence is a wonderful tool for living when it is applied in the right situation. It gives us time to think before we speak, and it does not introduce an interruption in a conversation while others are trying to express themselves.

There are some people who are very nervous when silence appears. They feel a need to fill the gaps. Obviously the silence that is golden is not the kind that makes everyone uncomfortable, but rightly used, it has great value. The Bible tells us to be slow to speak and quick to hear (James 1:19). It’s important for us all to remember that sometimes the best thing to say is nothing.

The experiences of yesterday ought to teach us where to go and what to avoid. That should make today more profitable. Hope is the anchor of the soul (Hebrews 6:19)—and hope always rests in tomorrow. So focus on today, within the experiences of yesterday and the hope of tomorrow.

The timing of some things that happen to us in life gives us reason to wonder if they truly were mere coincidences. Coincidences seem to go both ways in life—good and bad. God promises to care for us every day of our lives so that our feet will not slip (Psalm 94:18). That does not mean He blesses carelessness, but it does mean He is always aware of our situation.

Often a coincidence in our lives is a small miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous. A believer will often thank God for these small miracles. Even a nonbeliever sometimes utters that phrase. God does not wave a flag to let us know He has intervened in our lives, but we know that time and chance can take some most unusual twists and turns. Being thankful to Him for little miracles is never wrong. Don’t think everything is just a mere coincidence.

The word "attention" carries a few meanings that depend on how and when it is used. In the military, a soldier is expected to stand upright and face the incoming officer no matter what he is doing. The soldier would salute to show his respect. No soldier understands the command for "attention" to mean "stay sitting." He acknowledges and shows his understanding by rising quickly.

It doesn't do us any good to just sit up and take notice if we are commanded to stand. There is an action that is required when God calls us. When God speaks, we are to be at attention and we are to act. Living by every word from God includes taking notice of His commands and then acting (James 2:18).

When God leads us over stony paths, He also provides armor to help keep us safe (Ephesians 6:13-17). He provides friends and fellow travelers. He encourages us with goals, visions, hopes and dreams. He shines a bright light on the paths we are to follow. Follow the paths He sets before you and don’t forget to wear the armor He provides.

Our Heavenly Father is the perfect parent. If God had wanted us to be permissive, He would have given us the “Ten Suggestions.” He did not! He gave us the Ten Commandments. “You shall not” means no! Adam and Eve were not even to touch the tree in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:3). Our Heavenly Father has our well-being at heart at all times. His “no” needs our full attention.

When the financial scene changes, it makes sense that our habits should change as well. But breaking a habit is not easy to do, so people will sometimes slide into bankruptcy rather than change.

Money always seems to go further when it is accompanied by common sense and self-control. There are things we need and things we want. This line is sometimes blurred, but finding that line and buying only our needs when times are tight benefit our dollar control. Common sense added to our spending is the key. The example of Joseph, who had the sense to prepare for famine during the prosperous times, is one of the remarkable stories in scripture (Genesis 41:34-37). It takes control to plan ahead and spend wisely—but it can be done. Clip the wings of your dollars.

We are made of the clay of this earth (Job 33:6), but we can have a spotless reputation that will allow us to be more than that. It is the inner man that has value—and that value depends on character as reflected on our name.

A good name is more valuable that gold or silver (Proverbs 22:1). Since our reputation is our true treasure, it makes sense that we pay attention to our impact on other people—they observe and see our character in action. A regular self-examination will help keep our reputation clean and spotless. It is well worth the effort.

Once we believe and understand that there is a Creator and that He loves the world (John 3:16), we can relieve our minds of the strain of anxiety and helplessness that often leads toward depression. It is amazing how resourceful we can be when we are not hampered by worries. So let your requests be made know to God!

Maturity is not merely a matter of aging and years; it is a matter of internal mental development and character growth.

We cannot blame a child for the faults of society or the family into which he or she was born. Even adults cannot advance if they have no knowledge and understanding. Maturity can be grasped as a goal by any person who seeks, who knocks and who makes a determined effort to be better. We are advised to grow up. True maturity comes through coming to know God and putting away the childish practices and habits of our youth (1 Corinthians 13:11).

When steel is hardened by fire, we say it is "tempered." There are things that can happen to steel to make it lose its temper—and when that happens, the steel also loses its value and usefulness.

People are like steel in this regard; when they lose their temper, they also lose their worth. The Bible tells us to be angry and do not sin (Ephesians 4:26). That speaks to controlling our anger and controlling our temper. People who can do that are people who have great worth and great strength of character. We have the option to learn to control our tempers or not, but we should keep in mind what God commands. Keep your value and develop this strength.

We live among family, friends and strangers on this earth. We have the ability to decide how we live and how we interact with one another; we learn these skills as children and develop them into adulthood as we grow in knowledge. We can cause sorrow or we can cause joy in others. We can be sad or we can be glad.

It is a good goal to make at least one other person happy every day. The various scouting organizations encourage boys and girls to do one good deed every day. They try to make just a little difference in the life of someone else. That is a noble goal. It is designed to help and develop the scout as well as the recipient of the good deed.

Make at least one person happy every day and you will soon realize that you are happy too. There is an “echo” to passing on a compliment or happiness. These principles are taught in the Bible. We reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7) and we gain by first giving something away (Luke 6:38). But it is important to realize that when we pass something on, we should not expect something in return. Whatever comes back may not be what we expect, and we may not recognize its value. Just pass it on and know that you’ve helped to encourage others!

These opportunities allow us to experience sorrow and joy while giving us the opportunity to show admirable character and a steadfast light. There are none more admired and respected than those who bravely face the clouds and storms of their lives—they are an inspiration to us all. James said to rejoice when you have a trial (James 1:2). It is an opportunity to inspire others.

A number of years ago various "Random Acts of Kindness” days, weeks or months were proclaimed in different areas. Wikipedia says that Random Acts of Kindness Day is celebrated annually in the United States on Feb. 17 and in New Zealand on Sept. 1.

It’s great that people are trying to encourage more kindness, but when you think about it, it’s a shame that society has to be told to be kind for a set period of time.

Being kind is not something one does randomly or for a specified length of time. Truly being kind is a continual behavior that should be demonstrated in all aspects of life.

Paul wrote, “And be kind to one another” (Ephesians 4:32). Jesus set the example by being the kindest person ever. Follow Him and make your corner of the world a kind place all the time!

One day an old man was rocking on his porch when a moving van drove up. The driver asked, "What kind of people live in this town?"

"Well," the old man replied, "What kind of people live where you came from?" The driver responded, "They were the meanest, most unfriendly people you've ever heard of!" The old man sighed, "Drive on, because the same kind of people live here."

The next day another moving van drove by and the driver asked the same question, "What kind of people live in this town?" "Well," the old man asked, "What kind of people live where you came from?" The driver responded, "They were the kindest, friendliest people you've ever seen!" The old man smiled, "You'll love it here, because the same kind of people live here too!"

This old story illustrates that people tend to create their own environment. If they expect to be treated unkindly, they act unkind and bring it upon themselves. Philippians 2:3 counsels, "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself." This isn't talking about going around with an inferiority complex. Verses 4-7 show that with Jesus Christ in us, we can look out for the interests of others and serve them with outgoing love. We'll be making our town a kinder, friendlier place!

It is inevitable that we will face difficulty and weariness in this life. Regardless of our circumstances, there is someone to call on who cares for us; someone more powerful than any difficulty before us. The Creator God encourages us by saying, “But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). There is nothing God cannot help us with.

God promises to help us work through our problems. That does not mean we won’t have challenges. We will. And God will be right there carefully leading, guiding and intervening in ways not always evident to us. But be assured He is there. He promises, “Wait on the LORD, and keep His way, and He shall exalt you” (Psalm 37:34).

What we view on a regular basis affects our thinking and our emotions. Unchecked it can lead to sin. We live in a world filled with spiritual darkness. Jesus Christ tells us, “The lamp of the body is the eye… Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness” (Luke 11:34-35). Keep light in your mind by viewing those things that are true, noble, just, pure and lovely and avoid the darkness.

Jesus Christ tells His followers to become perfect (Matthew 5:48). So how do we accomplish that seemingly impossible task? God does not expect us to figure out perfection on our own or to come to our own conclusions about it. God is very specific and has given us His perfect instructions.

Where do we find those perfect instructions? James tells us, “…he who looks into the perfect law of liberty…will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:25). God’s law is the perfect way for humans to live. We need to study the Bible to know exactly what His laws and instructions are. And why would we not want to follow those as carefully as we possibly could?

Have you been in a hurry, standing at the grocery checkout line with only one item in hand while the person in front of you has an overflowing basket of groceries? When she noticed, did she ignore you or, through kindness, let you go ahead of her? Showing such kindness is a genuine act of love. Such acts bring joy to the heart, not only to the receiver but also to the giver.

The apostle Paul encourages us in Ephesians 4:32: "And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you."

Look for opportunities to be kind to others through both your words and actions. Each day, take the time to practice random acts of kindness with not only friends and family, but also with those you do not know.
